Idiopathic Scoliosis
Idiopathic scoliosis is the diagnosis that is given when the cause of the spinal deformity is unknown. As the etiology is unknown, there are many theories about the cause of idiopathic scoliosis. This spinal disease affects about 4% of the population and accounts for 80% of all scoliosis cases.
It most commonly develops in teenagers and is then called Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). During the adolescent growth spurt, AIS can progress rapidly. This happens more commonly in girls than in boys. In fact, girls have Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis 7-8 times more often than boys.
Many therapists agree that smaller curves are easier to correct than larger ones and it is our belief that even small curves should be treated early to prevent further deterioration.
This form of scoliosis is divided into different groups based on the age of onset:
- Infantile scoliosis
In infantile scoliosis, the diagnosed child is few months to 3 years old.
- Juvenile scoliosis
Juvenile scoliosis occurs in children between 3 – 10 years old.
- Adolescent scoliosis
Adolescent scoliosis is when the person is diagnosed between 10 years old and up, until they reach skeletal maturity.
