Default Scoliosis Activity Suit: Am I A Candidate?

The "Scoliosis Activity Suit" (formerly "the Tornado Suit") was designed for specific types of patients. Each prospective candidate patient must participate in a fitting process. This fitting process will ultimately determine whether or not the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM will be beneficial to them.

Although the fitting process will be the definitive guide as to whether or not a prospective patient is a good candidate for the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM, there are general categories of patients who typically have the best results with the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM. They are as follows:

Juvenile/Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Children with early, mild curves are ideal candidates for the Scoliosis Activity Suit TM. These children can be genetically tested to determine their respective potential for risk progression. If they have an elevated genetic risk for scoliosis progression, then it is wise to get them fitted for a Scoliosis Activity SuitTM to keep the chance of progression minimal.

Patients with larger scoliosis curves who are opting against rigid bracing and/or surgery: Due to the psychological impact of rigid bracing, as well as the safety risks and costs associated with scoliosis surgery, many patients or their parents are looking for viable alternative to these procedures. The Scoliosis Activity SuitTM, as part of a comprehensive scoliosis rehabilitation program, may enhance the benefits of neuromuscular reeducation, as well as to minimize the impact of postural collapse that occurs throughout the day in scoliosis patients.

Finally, adult patients with scoliosis whose curve(s) are causing chronic back or hip pain: Adult patients with scoliosis often report chronic back pain as the number one reason for seeking treatment. In these cases, the scoliosis has been present for decades, and has become very rigid and restrictive. Adult patients often prefer the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM because it helps them improve their posture, and allows them to fulfill their normal daily activities without the fear of pain and discomfort. Since many adult patients with scoliosis are peri- or post-menopausal, the TornadoSuitTM may help prevent further deterioration of bone density, which often occurs in this age population as a result of the hormone changes associated with menopause.

The Scoliosis Activity SuitTM works on two very different levels. First, the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM causes the body’s postural reflexes to engage and automatically self-correct the scoliosis. This type of correction is complex and therefore requires highly skilled Scoliosis Activity SuitTM fitters to accomplish this. Secondly, it also works similarly to rigid bracing wherein the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM acts as a physical barrier to prevent postural collapse, or increased deviation of the torso away from the midline of the body. Many Scoliosis Activity SuitTM physicians will opt for both applications during different aspects of a scoliosis rehabilitation program. However, neuromuscular re-education must be a core component of any scoliosis rehabilitation program in which the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM is being used, otherwise, the Scoliosis Activity SuitTM will not produce the desired effect.

The TornadoSuit is just what we have been looking for a, suit that you can wear that will help to strengthen the muscles around the spine.

Sounds interesting. Had a look at the linked website but still could not really understand how it works.

    Hi Will,

I have met with Dr. Morningstar at his clinic several times now in regards to the Tornado Suit technology and I must say it is rather impressive.

The Tornado Suit is really a "scoliosis activity suit" and not a scoliosis brace, because, unlike a scoliosis brace (which is passive curve correction in nature) the Tornado Suit actually causes muscle activation and re-training.

It accomplishes this by triggering a "re-active" response from the spinal muscles, causing them to want to "de-rotate" back out of the spine curvature. Essentually, it makes the muscles stronger to resist the scoliosis twisting, while a scoliosis brace makes the muscles weaker.

Having hands on experience with the TornadosuitTM it's primary design is rotation around the central axis of the body which when used in an indirect fashion (pulling the spine into further rotation) causes the body's stabilization system to react by contracting opposing muscle forces to counteract the suits force thereby causing muscle adaptation from increased demand as long as the body can resist the forces from the suit the spine will be self correcting reducing scoliotic rotational deformity.

This is very significant because newer weight based NMR primarily the "scoliosis cantilever"TM
systems developed by myself are working primarily translational and lateral flexion components so when combined with the tornado suit create a near complete profile in truly attacking this condition from a RE-ACTIVE based 3-D perspective

We are gaining lots of traction!

    Sounds promising Dr Dovorany.

Would heat be an issue with the Tornado suit? I have seen kids here in tropical Asia that developed heat rash from normal braces. I understand that Tornado Suit is made out of neoprene and I start thinking of hot diving suits.

Is there any specific criteria for who might be a candidate to benefit from the Tornado suit? Would a 39 year old male struggling with this 60 degree (approximately) curve benefit?
I feel significant benefits when I maintain the CLEAR protocol unfortunately Im unable to maintain it consistently for the extended period of time I need too. Im good for several months and then life - 2 kids (one under construction!) and 2 jobs - get in the way. Im actually considering working only part-time next year (if I can work it out financially) so I might have more time for home excercise and visits to Dr. Greaux. Im hoping between the two I might be able to get this under some kind of control. Progression is about 1-2 degrees a year and with the age Im feeling more and more discomfort and pain (especially the neck) all the time.

Other than the criteria outlined at the beginning of this thread, there are no specific criteria per se. The reason I say that is because the mechanism of action of the TornadoSuit requires that patients who are interested in getting one be tested first to make sure that it will benefit them. Your curve severity in and of itself has been improved in other patients, so from that standpoint, yes you could consider yourself a candidate. In reality though there are many factors involved, and therefore each patient must be treated as an individual.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask any time.
